WLKR News wins 1st & 2nd Place Best Newscast Class AA at KHSJA 2010.06.02 from Press Release
For the 3rd year in a row, and for the 4th time in the last 9 years, the TV-news program of Russell County High School known as “WLKR News” has been named Best Newscast in Class AA by the Kentucky High School Journalism Association. What makes this year’s competition unique for RCHS is that WLKR News also finished 2nd for another one of its newscast entries in the same competition. Each year the Current Issues teacher, Chris Godby, enters one newscast from the Fall Semester Staff and one from the Spring Semester Staff in this annual state-wide competition. This year’s 1st place entry was from the Fall Semester Staff for their late November episode which included an interview with Gov. Steve Beshear. The 2nd place entry from the Spring Semester Staff included a story about local relief efforts for the Haiti disaster. As always, Mr. Godby is very proud of the efforts and creativity of his students. “This year’s classes had a lot of enthusiasm for this type of work. Some were already experienced speakers like news anchors Katie Dalton and Alex Hoover. I was fortunate to have a group that learned technical skills quickly, and was always trying to outdo themselves. Also I was blessed to have Chanson Davenport as the Student Producer for both semesters. He has a very creative eye; and you only have to show him how to do something once and he gets it.” The final newscast of the school year is currently airing on Duo County Cable channel 2, Fridays and Mondays at 2pm and 4pm. A 2009-2010 Season DVD collection is also available by contacting Mr. Godby at RCHS.
Seniors Visit the Big Apple 2010.05.20 by Alex Hoover, WLKR News Staff
Several members of the Russell County High Class of 2010 recently traveled north for their Senior Trip, spending the majority of their time in New York City. While away from school for the week, the seniors learned more of their nation’s history and experienced the diverse cultures that the Big Apple has to offer. On their way to the city, the group stopped at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for a tour and opportunity to visit the museum at the historic landmark. Gettysburg, the site of the nation’s bloodiest battle in the Civil War, is maintained to look as it did during the war. The students stepped back in history with their tour guide, stopping at various key battle points during the battle; they also traveled to the Gettysburg National Cemetery to witness where President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address.
After their time in Gettysburg, the group traveled on to New York City, where they spent the majority of their trip. While in the city, they visited historical sites and tourist attractions, ate at Planet Hollywood and Dallas BBQ, and spent time shopping in Times Square. They also visited Fifth Avenue, the Empire State Building, Ground Zero, and Chinatown. One afternoon they took a cruise along through the New York Harbor and had a view of the city, Statue of Liberty, and Liberty and Ellis Island.
After a week in New York, the group began their journey home, making a stop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While there, they toured historic downtown streets, visited the Liberty Bell, and spent time in Independence Hall.
The trip was enjoyed by all who went, and each person had the opportunity of a lifetime. Whether they were shopping on Fifth Avenue, bargaining in Chinatown, or watching their picture flash across Time Square, this trip will be a great memory for everyone.
RCHS Y-CLUB: “One Planet, One People” at KUNA 2010.04.20 by Alex Hoover, WLKR News Staff
“One Planet, One People” was the theme at the 2010 Kentucky United Nations Assembly. Also known as KUNA, this three-day event exposes teens to international diplomacy and global issues as they spend time debating and taking on active roles as citizens from various nations. The Russell County High School Student YMCA, or Y-Club, traveled to Louisville March 21-23 to participate in the event.
During their time at the conference, sponsored annually by the Kentucky YMCA Association, the delegates from RCHS participated in a global village, parade of nations, and debate summits. Of the nearly 50 proposals debated on the second day of the conference, only eight were presented in the General Assembly as the “highest ranking proposals.” Authors Ben Lee and Jonathan Dunn, both juniors at RCHS, were able to present their highly ranked bill to reform the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in front of the General Assembly.
In other awards, senior Whitney Grider and junior Ben Lee were recognized as Outstanding Ambassadors and received invitations to the Conference on National Affairs in July. Whitney served as the KUNA Chaplain and opened the conference in prayer and also served on the Security Council.
Tra Taylor, a junior at RCHS, spent his time at KUNA campaigning for the Executive Council of the 2011 Kentucky United Nations Assembly. Tra’s hard work payed off, and he was elected by over 1500 students from across the state to serve as next year’s President of the Security Council. This a great honor, and Tra will lead the top seniors at the conference in debate in the Security Council chambers.
The Russell County High School delegation and their advisors also received a prestigious award at the 2010 Kentucky United Nations Assembly. The “Statesmanship Award” is presented to the advisor of the delegation that represents the “four core values of the YMCA” of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility throughout the conference, and was awarded to Pete Lee in honor of Russell County High School. This coveted award is second only to the “Best Delegation” award, which the RCHS Y-Club won at the 2009 KUNA.
Congratulations to all award winners and the 2011 Security Council President Tra Taylor. The RCHS Y-Club would also like to thank advisors Pete Lee and Deidre Blakey for their hard work and commitment to the club, as well as Stacey Anderson, Charlie Anderson, Junior Blakey, and Jamie Lee.
